PostSubject: Peat Place Whitehaven   Wed Sep 16, 2009 1:16 pm

Thanks to Sean for doing the initial posting for me. The Fire insurance policy in the name of Ruth KNIPE at 2 Peat Place Pipe House Lane is spot on as she is my G/G/grandmother. Jonathan Peat and Ruth, plus Ruth's daughter Hannah Benson lived in either 1 or 2 Peat Place from 1861 through to 1897 when Ruth died. Is there any way that I can find out whether the houses were owned or rented?
Would any kind soul who takes walks in church graveyards have a look to see if there are any KNIPE gravestones in any of the old church properties. I am researching the Knipes and any of their offshoots.
Thanks
Bev

Hi Bev and welcome! Smile

I see the 1861 census gives Jonathan PEAT's occupation (and, presumably his source of income) as Gentleman (House Proprietor). Clearly the "place" was named after its owner.

As far as I can see, the names Pipe House Lane and NewTown are practically interchangeable, and Peat Place appears to have been between No.32 and No.33.

Hi Geoff,
Thanks for the welcome-am very happy to be here! Laughing This forum is giving me huge insight into modern England, the good, the bad and the ugly- but you all seem a very positive and helpful bounce bunch- said as a geniune compliment!
Added to what you said;l
Ruth Knipe was enumerated as living off a small property income from [1881 I think!] In the 1891 census The Benson's ie Ruth Knipe's daughter Hannah and son-in-law lived at either 32 or 33 so at some point the houses [possibly 1 Peat Place first ] was sold. William Knipe, Ruth's son learnt his trade in Whitehaven as a ship's carpenter.
How far is CrossCanonby from Whitehaven?
Bev

In ecclesiatistical matters, Crosscanonby is rather "the tail that wags the dog". The dog in this case is Maryport.

Maryport is about 15 miles up the coast from Whitehaven - map http://tinyurl.com/p9vzn5

A couple of miles to the NE of Maryport is Crosscanonby. For many years, Maryport (a town) was part of the parish of Crosscanonby (a village). In the earlier censuses, you will find Maryport classified as Crosscanonby (in 1841 Canonby Cross). Equally, in the IGI, many Maryport folk are found in the Crosscanonby registers.

Thanks Geoff!
I have to get my head around the distance story- I do not have a really good map of Cumbria that shows all the little hamlets pre 1800. I am asking you to look at my "Cumberland problem" and perhaps give me some outsiders input.
We have a serious block with our base Knipe, Thomas KNIPE- we know where he was married [Plumbland] in 1815 but the marriage certificate says that he was a husbandman[farmer] and a bachelor of CrossCanonby. Does this mean that he could really have been from Maryport?
He married a Ritson [Frances], who was the daughter of a John RITSON of Fitts, and I have found out that that is an area near Plumbland.
They had only one child that we can "find" John chr 1818 in Bolton Parish. Thomas was a farmer on the certificate. There were Ritsons in Bolton at the time.
On the 1841 census, he and Frances were "living" with John and his wife Ruth Peat-as of Peat Place!-in Wigton.
On his death certificate [1842] he was of Maryport- and died in Maryport, a yeoman- do not really know what a yeoman is/was! From this I am making a guesstimate that he was born around 1783. However all the Thomas Knipes born in 1783 are not him- unfortunately!
Although the Knipe name is few and far between in Cumberland, I have wills of a John and a William from the early 1700 and they lived in St Bees and Whitehaven!!!!!!! They had a half brother Thomas who might well be "our Thomas" line.
I would love to crack this family's origins [my mother was a Knipe] and have done so much research -all leading up the wrong path!!!!!!
That will keep you busy!
Bev

"bachelor of CrossCanonby" means he was resident in CrossCanonby (or Maryport) at the time of his marriage ... it neither states nor implies his place of birth.

Plumbland is 5-6 miles east of Crosscanonby/Maryport - map http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=309920&Y=536960&A=Y&Z=126

Fitz is a short distance NE(ish) from Plumbland http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=315040&Y=539920&A=Y&Z=120

Yes, I see them in 1841 - Tom's age is given as 55 - suggesting he was born 1781-1786. Could he not be the one bap 1787 at Uldale? It's not so far from Plumbland - map http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=320560&Y=537840&A=Y&Z=126

You will then find a 1780 marriage for a Thomas KNIFE.

Yeoman - A farmer who cultivates his own land, especially a member of a former class of small freeholders in England.

No guarantees, just possibilities. Smile

Note too - there were quite a few KNIPEs in Westmorland.

Thanks for all the info! I think that I am working in an area which is no bigger than I travel to work each day!!!
I would love our Tom to be the Uldale Thomas, but that Thomas [from the parish records of Uldale and picked up by a very smart lady,Linda, at the Cumbria Archives] died age 21 and that rules him out. He was the son of Thomas Knife of Uldale who married a Ann Redpath. They actually lived in Cow Wath. I tracked the whole family plus Auntie Ann via her will until Linda dropped the bomb!
Linda also put me on to an Eleanor Knipe of CrossCanonby who married a William Curwen of Maryport in 1816 in CrossCanonby. I am not taking this as a possible sister until I find something more conclusive, but it does seem highly likely. There are no other Knipes in CrossCanonby.
Enough for one day-
Bev

Ealeonar CURWEN 40 was a Grocer in Canonby Cross in 1841. Perhaps died 1846.

Another piece of useless info for you- a granddaughter of Ruth Knipe-another Ruth Knipe worked at Workington Hall[owned by the Curwen family] as an inside maid. And that is about as far as we got to the rich and famous! Embarassed She was one of the tribe that came to SA elephant and all her daughters were very posh. Regretfully, only one married well!!!!!!
Rather fancy these "emoticons"
