About

myWhitehaven.co.uk was one of the most popular Whitehaven based websites, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Originally, the aim of the site was to promote the town, through historical information and photography. Unfortunately the aims of the site were challenged by the attitudes of some that hold office, or by those that have an influence over the town. Due to negative reactions over constructive criticism, I decided to call it a day, and shut the site down.

After some serious thinking about the closure, I decided to relaunch myWhitehaven.co.uk for the people of Whitehaven, so that they can have a say over what is good, and bad, about the town. The site was relaunched at the beginning of September, 2011.

myWhitehaven.co.uk is your chance to have a voice over issues affecting your town. Unlike a weekly newspaper, this site is available 24/7. Concerns won't go away, or be forgotten - they will have to be addressed. If concerns aren't addressed, the town risks falling further into gutter.

This site isn't about attacking the reputation of Whitehaven, it's about highlighting issues that are ignored, or wrong - it's about instigating action to get the wrongs right. myWhitehaven.co.uk isn't just here to criticise, what's good about the town will also receive praise and recognition.

One of the reasons (there are many) for relaunching the site was due to a recent comment that I saw on Twitter. The sad thing is, I had to agree with the absolute shit-hole remark. If this is the attitude that visitors to the town have, what hope do we have of prospering?

If, like me, you are frustrated about issues affecting Whitehaven, join me - let's tackle the problems, so that we can be proud of our town, so that the negatives can be turned into positives. If you would like to contribute to the site on a regular basis, please drop me a line.

How can you contribute? you can get involved on a number of levels.

1) Send in your contribution by email and I will publish it.
2) Ask to be a site author, and publish yourself.
3) Contribute to articles by responding in the comments section.

Thank heavens there is somebody who recognises what is special about Whitehaven and doesn't want to see its most valuable asset, its historic buildings, destroyed by ignorant planning decisions!

Family history is now the fastest growing hobby, and many visitors to Whitehaven are family historians. They come from other parts of the British Isles, from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and America. They want to see the streets where their ancestors lived, and they want to see as much of the old town as possible. As one of them I know how disappointing it is to find that the address I have identified by looking at the Censuses and old maps has been taken over by a 21st-century glass box.

This has the potential to be a brilliant site. I love the headings and the content you've already added is fabulously well thought out. Just wanted you to know... it's brilliant.
